New Tea Party PAC expected to raise $10 million

With a vow to “take away the mystery of campaigns,” organizers of the first-ever Tea Party Convention followed up Friday with the announcement of a new political action committee that would work to elect “tea party”-style candidates in as many as 20 national races this fall.

0205-tea-party-political-action-committee.jpg_full_380

For example, the Tea Party Express PAC spent $285,000 on Scott Brown’s race in Massachusetts. His victory bolstered the fortunes of the tea party movement by breaking the Democrats’ filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, putting much of the Democratic agenda, including healthcare reform, in jeopardy. Moreover, there are literally dozens of smaller tea party PACs from Tennessee to California working to raise money for local tea party candidates.

Such PACs are expected to play a role in dozens of upcoming congressional elections in Florida, Kentucky, Arizona, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, and several other states.

How wide and deep-pocketed that appeal is, the organizers promise, will be apparent via a comprehensive website where donors can track the Ensuring Liberty PAC’s efforts down to the dollar. Skoda believes the PAC will raise $10 million this year.

Prius problems deepen Toyota woes

Toyota’s troubles multiplied its flagship Prius hybrid became the latest model to be targeted in an expanding web of US investigations. Toyota decided to recall an estimated 270,000 Prius cars in Japan and the US to fix the brake problem.

toyota-prius-giveaway

The Japanese automaker has been hit by a whirlwind of safety concerns around the globe and US authorities are scrambling to assure concerned public and angry lawmakers who have begun their own probes into vehicle defects.

The admission of a brake design flaw with its star green car and the subsequent US probe are major new blows that could not have come at a worse time for the world’s largest automaker.

Toyota was already under fire in the US for its handling of massive recalls affecting about eight million vehicles worldwide “more than its entire 2009 global sales of 7.8 million vehicles “due to accelerator trouble.

The latest developments were particularly worrying for Toyota because the Prius has created a global buzz and been Japan’s top-selling car since June “ahead of its main rival, Honda’s Insight.

Toyota had sold nearly 1.5 million Prius vehicles in 40 countries as of August 31 since the first version’s launch in 1997, making it the world’s most popular hybrid car.

Facebook removes banner ads of Microsoft from its site

Facebook took full control of display ads on the world most popular social networking website, cutting short an exclusive deal that had allowed Microsoft Corp to manage part of that business.

facebook

However, Microsoft — the exclusive provider of Web search on Facebook — will continue to sell text-based search ads on the website as the partners extended the arrangement beyond 2011, when it had been due to expire. Microsoft invested $240 million in Facebook for a 1.6 percent stake in the company in October 2007.

Microsoft also said it will further integrate its Bing search engine into Facebook while expanding its reach beyond the United States.

“Ad formats that feature social actions perform better and provide a better user experience since they are more consistent with the look and feel of Facebook,  ”This combination of targeting and social relevance is the primary driver behind the shift in strategy.”

Facebook, which lets users connect and share information with friends online, has emerged as one of the Internet’’s most popular destinations and is increasingly challenging the Web’s established powerhouses like Yahoo Inc  and Google Inc.

FOREX- Euro/dollar falls to 7-mth low

The euro plunged to a fresh seven-month low against the dollar on Thursday amid growing concerns over the fiscal health of debt-laden euro zone countries.

forex-time-machine-symbols

Worries over debt levels in Spain and Portugal have increased as investors speculate the two countries may face budget deficit and debt problems like those of Greece. Such concerns helped lift the relatively safer haven U.S. dollar and yen.

Euro zone fiscal problems increase chances the U.S. economy will recover more quickly and the U.S. central bank will lift interest rates before the European Central Bank. Such a move would make dollar-based assets more attractive.

Investors are now largely focused on the key U.S. non-farm payrolls numbers
