China is facing safety problems these days in terms of elevators and escalators. Safety experts have warned that there might be more elevator and escalator accidents if problems in the industry are not solved. The experts’ warning for future consequences comes after two tragedies in just three days.
On May 15, 2013, a 24-year-old woman was killed in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, when she was about to step out of the elevator. The doors of the elevator closed on her head and could not be opened. This left her stuck between the doors. The administration of work safety of Luohu district said that the woman was concentrating on her cell phone due to which she did not realize that the doors were closing.
The deceased was an intern at a hospital and was a native of Shanxi province. The findings of the accident investigation were not available on May 16, 2013. Property management company said that the four elevators in the building had undergone maintenance just three days before the accident.
In another incident, a woman was killed while riding an escalator as one step was missing at a supermarket in Yichang, Hubei province. In 2012, there were 36 reported elevator and escalator accidents, claiming 28 lives.
