A Raja granted bail by Delhi court in 2G spectrum case

A Delhi court in the 2G spectrum case has granted bail to former telecom minister A Raja on May 15, 2012. Raja has been granted bail after 15 months of his arrest.

Special CBI Judge OP Saini said, “The bail application is allowed”. The bail has been allowed on a bond of Rs. 20 lakh and also two sureties of the same amount.

But before the bail was granted, the court imposed certain conditions on Raja saying that he will not visit the state of Tamil Nadu without its prior permission and will also not go to the Department of Telecom (DoT). The 14 page bail order from the court has also mentioned that Raja will not try to influence any eye witnesses on bail.

The former Telecom minister was arrested on February 2, 2012. On hearing the news of Raja’s bail the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalitha reacted and said that the 2G scam case is getting diluted. But the DMK on the other hand welcomed the decision and its leader Tiruchi Siva said , “We welcome the court’s verdict and are hopeful that he will come out and prove his innocence”. Siva also said that Raja will take part in the activities of the party work as per the conditions laid by the court.

Air India not to accept bookings to Europe and US till May 17

National carrier Air India on May 14, 2012 extended the bar on the flights for the west bound flights till May 17, 2012. The strike of the pilots has completed a week today on May 14 and the flights were cancelled further despite the fact that it had mulled the option of shutting down the global operations.

More than 200 pilots have come down to protest due to which 14 international flights have been cancelled. This on the other hand has adversely affected the travelling passengers.

The airline earlier announced that it would not accept bookings for flights to North America and Europe till Tuesday. The airline official said that it has extended the period to May 17, 2012.

The officials added that the complete closure of the international operations was not ruled out if the strike continued and added that these services were responsible for about 48 percent of the operational losses of the ailing carrier. A court order held the protest as illegal and later even the government refused to hold talks with the protesting pilots till they get back to work. After the cancellation of the flights hundreds of passengers were stranded at the airport.

Delhi based businessman dies after being hit by private plane

On May 12, 2012 a Delhi based businessman died on the spot after he was hit by a private plane which met with an accident. The accident of the micro light private plane took place at the Partapur airstrip in Meerut.

The pilot and his colleague escaped unhurt. Yogesh Garg was hit by the wing of the private plane, when he was trying to click pictures of the aircraft while it was trying to take off. The police revealed that Yogesh, who runs a consultancy company in New Delhi died on the spot.

The spokesperson of Pankh Aviation, Anil Thapa said that the wing and the wheel of the plane was damaged in the accident but the pilot, Anil Gupta escaped and his colleague escaped the incident. Eye witnesses said that Garg came on the airstrip to take the pictures of the plane while it was taking off from the runway.

The police is now trying to find out, who allowed Garg on the runway to take pictures. Neeraj Shukla, the Additional District Magistrate, reached the spot and said that the preliminary inquiry revealed that Pankh Aviation was not allowed to use the airstrip, but the company claimed that it has been giving flying training from the past three to four months.

Air India pilots warned to end strike by 6 pm or to face consequences

The pilots of Air India, who are on strike have been warned by the management on May 8, 2012 to take back the strike and return to work by 6 pm or they may have to face action. Civil Aviation minister Ajit Singh earlier in the day termed the strike as ‘illegal’.

The minister added that the airline would take appropriate action against those involved in the strike. Singh also revealed that the pilots went on sick leave while they were in talks with the management, which they led to the cancellation of the flights.

The strike affected four Air India International flights from New Delhi and Mumbai, after about 100 pilots refused to join work. Singh while talking to the reporters said, “They are reporting sick. They have not given any notice for any strike. So whatever the Air India management rules and regulations, action will be taken accordingly”.

Singh also said if he talks with Air India had failed then they could have spoken to the ministry or him. Air India is currently undergoing a turbulent period and crores of public money is being infused to run the carrier. Singh also revealed that several sections has grievances and that there is always a solution to a problem.

Telecom companies with cancelled licenses to shut operations on June 2?

Asia Bizz: After the Indian Supreme Court cancelled the licenses of some mobile phone companies, certain reports allege that telecom companies might have to suspend their operations in the Asian nation from June 2, 2012. The operations might be shut down as the government might not approach the court to seek an extension of the deadline of four months.

In an order passed on February 2, 2012, the Supreme Court cancelled the licenses of about 122 mobile permits allotted in the year 2008. The court had also directed the government to issue fresh licenses through auctions within the time of four months.

In its clarification petition, the Indian government said that it will require at least a minimum of 400 days to conduct the auctions and added that the process would be complete by the month of March 2013. R Chandrasekhar, the Telecom secretary confirmed the operations of the companies of which the licenses have been quashed and stated that they have to stop on June 2, 2012, unless the court grants an extension.

But surprisingly, the Apex Court last week refused to reconsider its order to cancel 122 telecom permits which were issued by the telecom minister A Raja. Meanwhile seven companies have filed for a review petition before the court.

India test fires Agni V missile successfully

Asia Bizz: The Agni-V missile was today on April 19, 2012 successfully test fired by India from the Wheeler Island, off the coast of Orissa. The Agni-V missile is a long range, nuclear capable and ballistic missile of 5,000 km.

The Scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) said that the missile was launched at 8:07 am, it soared 600 km high and also reached its destination and target. The missile has been developed by DRDO.

Dr. VK Saraswat, the chief of DRDO described the launch as a ‘super hit’ and game changer and added that India is now a missile power. With the launch of the Agni V, it has proved all its technological capabilities.

The successful lift up of the Agni V has pushed the name of India in to the elite club of nations, who are now experts in launching intercontinental ballistic missiles. The prestigious elite clue also includes the names of the nations like, France, China, Russia and US. The missile travelled the distance of 5,000 kms in 20 minutes and entered in to the Earth’s atmosphere at a high speed. Dr. Avinash Chander, the Chief Controller of DRDO said that the Agni V missile is 17 metre tall, three stage, solid propellant fuelled and has a capacity to carry 1.5 tonne payload.

Nokia Asha 306 to have full touchscreen for Indian version

Asia Bizz: It has already been predicted that the new Nokia Asha 306 will be a success in the market after its launch in India. The new Asha is a low-end phone series and the company is planning to launch a full touchscreen version of it in the country.

Many tech blogs on the internet have also provided information about the handset from reliable sources. The new Asha series phone is likely to be named as Asha 306 and is supposed to come with a full touchscreen version instead of the regular keypad.

The features of the new 306 Asha include a 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen display, but at the same time it will not be able to challenge the leading smarthphones in the market. Some of the leaked images of the phone shows that it is a small handset and is likely to be the best of the Asha series due to its touchscreen and other advanced features.

In terms of the multimedia features, the device might be equipped with FM radio and an MP3 player with 3.5 mm jack for the earpiece. The device will also flaunt a micro USB slot which will allow the users to share files in the personal computer.

Japan’s Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank to have biometric dependent ATM

Asia Bizz: A regional bank in Japan, Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank, is expected to launch an automated teller machine (ATM) which will identify users with their palms. The bank will become the Asian country’s first financial institution to adopt the new range of machines.

The Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank in Gifu Prefecture revealed that it will install about 12 palm scanning biometric ATMs by the month of September and will be installing more in the near future. The new system has been developed by Fujitsu Ltd in which users will be able to prove who they are by getting the palm of their hands scanned.

The customers of the bank will also have to enter their PIN number, along with their date of birth. The best part is the system does not demand any cash card or passbook.

The palm-scanning idea was developed after many people lost their personal possessions in the tsunami disaster in Japan last year. People had no means to have an access to their money and the new system will be of great assistance to the public and the government. The bank informed that the new system will be the second in the world to have a biometric dependent ATM.

The Ziraat Bank, which is the largest bank in Turkey, has the world’s first bank to have a biometric ATM system.

Spice Jet flight makes precautionary landing at Mumbai airport

Asia Bizz: A Spice Jet flight with 106 passengers aboard left for Chennai on April 13, 2012, but had to make a precautionary landing in the morning, after the pilot reported a technical snag in the aircraft. The SG-281 flight took off from Ahmedabad and made a safe landing at the Mumbai Airport at 06:50 am.

The private airline revealed the details of tge incident in a statement saying, “It was a precautionary landing and in order to avoid inconvenience to the passengers on board the Ahmedabad-Chennai flight, we pro-actively accommodated them in our other flight and on other airlines as well,”.

The statement also added that the aircraft had a minor problem and is now fully operational. There was no emergency landing and all the 106 passengers along with the crew members are safe.

Meanwhile, the engineers of the aircraft are examining the plane and are expected to give their report soon. Officials from the Mumbai Airport said that there has been no disruptions of the regular flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai due to the incident. The flight took off from Ahmedabad at 5:45 am and the passengers were flown to Chennai at 11:30 am.

Diesel prices to be hiked after passing of finance bill

Asia Bizz: Once the Indian finance bill for the current financial year has been passed the retail prices of subsidized fuel, including diesel, will be raised. The Parliament is yet to pass the finance bill of the current year after which there are chances that the prices of diesel might also be increased.

The finance bill is expected to be considered by the Parliament on May 7, 2012 and is expected to be approved in a couple of days. A source, who did not wish to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, told First Post, “The government’s credibility on fiscal consolidation is at stake. After crude prices remaining over $120 a barrel, hike in oil (fuel) prices is certain,”.

Even Indian finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is determined to raise prices of fuel as soon as possible in order to tackle a rising subsidy burden as well as large deficits. But the move might not be good for the weak coalition government, which has already been fired for high inflation.

The last time prices of diesel were raised was in July 2011, but the government has not fulfilled its promise to liberalize the market fully. The prices of diesel were also expected to rise earlier this year.
