Additional reports have revealed that the former president has been sent to two weeks of judicial custody, during which he is expected to stay at his farmhouse on the outskirts of Islamabad. His villa has been declared as a sub-jail after his first arrest in April 2013. In March 2013, Musharraf returned to his home country after four years of self-imposed exile and is now officially forbidden to leave Pakistan.

The former Pakistani President has been arrested over a number of high-profile cases against him, including the assassination of the former president Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Bugti was killed in a military operation which was ordered by Musharraf in 2006, at the time when he was the President and the army chief of Pakistan.

The death of Bugti angered the Pakistani people and initiated protests across the country. Tehrik-e-Taliban issued many threats regarding the assassination of the former President. The militants of the group were angered when Musharraf launched an operation against the extremists who were holed up in Lal Masjid in Islamabad in 2007.

Therefore, the Aam Aadmi Party leader wants to be technically correct and is getting his voter identity card prepared in the capital. He has surrendered his old voter ID and has acquired a new one with the place of residence in F Block, Sundar Nagri, in East Delhi.

Before the move, Kejriwal was residing in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and this address was mentioned in his old voter card. Kejriwal’s move is just another step in entering the political scene and opposing Dikshit. In addition to this, the Aam Aadmi Party leader also launched a campaign for creating party volunteers in the area.

Part of his campaign against Sheila Dikshit also includes recruitment of volunteers from the New Delhi constituency. The local volunteers will be taking on the responsibility of about 15 to 20 homes in the vicinity.

The trip by Khurshid is coming after a three-week border standoff between India and China. The Minister will be meeting Premier Li Keqiang and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing. On May 8, 2013, Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that China and India have timely and properly solved the standoff in accordance with the common interests and wishes of both sides.

Khurshid also suggested that he might reconsider his travel plans if there was no progress in resolving the dispute.

The 69-year-old was arrested on Friday and was taken to the court of judicial magistrate Muhammed Abbas Shah. Musharraf was remanded in police custody ad was to be produced before the anti-terrorism court within two days.

Police officials were earlier informed that they do not want physical custody of Musharraf and could be placed in judicial custody. Several lawyers had filed petitions against the former president for imposing emergency rule in the year 2007 and said that he should be kept in police custody. Musharraf had also detained more than 60 members of superior judiciary during the emergency rule.

Questions were also raised as to why Musharraf was not handcuffed after he was arrested. Qamar Afzal, Musharraf’s lawyer argued that his client must be kept under judicial custody as there were serious threats to his life. TV footage had shown how Musharraf was led to the magistrate’s small office by several policemen and paramilitary personnel.

Musharraf had applied for an extension of bail in connection to the sacking of about 60 judges during the emergency. The 69-year-old appeared in court with heavy security arrangements. Musharraf returned to Pakistan on March 24, 2013, after a four year-long self imposed exile, so as to contest the general elections on May 11, 2013.

The bench, after dismissing the application, ordered the police to arrest Pervez immediately. Musharraf’s security team rushed in quickly as soon as the order was given and took him out of the court in his black SUV, without being stopped. According to the TV channels, the motorcade of the former ruler drove from the court to his farmhouse, at Chak Shahzad on the outskirts of Islamabad.

The security team, army commandos and a large number of supporters of the minister had gathered outside the court complex. Since his return to Pakistan, Musharraf have been making frequent visits to the court to extend his bail.

Musharraf’s intentions of entering the Parliament ended the most almost a month before the general elections took place. The election tribunal had rejected his candidature for a parliamentary seat in Chitral. This was the only constituency where the nomination papers had been accepted.

The 69-year-old had plans to contest the polls in four parliamentary seats in Chitral, Kasur, Karachi and Islamabad. Moreover, two other election tribunals had barred Musharraf from contesting polls from the constituencies in Islamabad and Kasur in the province of Punjab. The tribunals consist of high court judges, who upheld the decisions by the Returning Officers to reject Musharraf’s nomination papers for National Assembly Constituencies.

The development has come a day after another election tribunal had dismissed Musharraf’s appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers for constituency in the southern port city of Karachi. The rivals said that Musharraf could not contest the elections as he violated the constitution by imposing an emergency rule in 2007. An appeal was filed by Musharraf in the tribunals against the Returning Officer’s decision.

Another interesting fact about the process of candidate selection has surfaced. Any resident of Delhi who has the support of a minimum of 100 people becomes eligible to fill out a form for candidature and submit it to the party by May 5, 2013. These forms will then be screened, after which the final list will be announced within two months. The selected candidates will be interviewed by the political affairs committee.

On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party has not yet announced from which consultancy Kejriwal will be contesting the elections. Manish Sisodia, a senior member of the party, said that its members are quite enthusiastic and positive about Kejriwal contesting the polls. Sisodia also announced that the party plans to invite applications and recommendations from common people for all the 70 constituencies in Delhi. The party leader also added that it has not yet decided if any top leader will be contesting the polls.

Suu Kyi, after arriving at the airport, attended a gathering in of the Myanmar democracy activists in Tokyo, who are based in Japan. Kyi received a warm welcome and appealed to her supporters that they must make use of all that they learnt from their time in Japan, which will mark the betterment of a fast-reforming Myanmar.

The politician said, “Whether you return to Myanmar or not, please always appreciate the gratitude of your host country for allowing you all the chance to live here and learn, and nurture your kids”. The country of Myanmar has marked a shift towards democracy from oppressive military regime and Japan has helped to assist Myanmar in its democratic and economic reform.

Kyi will be calling for a greater investment during her meetings, which have been planned with prime minister Shinzo Abe and foreign minister Fumio Kishida.

Kejriwal made it clear that he was ending his fast, but the protest will continue. The activist began his fast on March 23, 2013 and has lost 6 Kgs since.

On April 5, 2013, the 44-year-old announced that around 10 lakh people have signed his petition, in which people have agreed that the government is cheating on them. Arvind said that he is adopting the ‘satyagraha’ tactics of protest, for which he would like the residents of Delhi to help his team reconnect the power supply to homes which are without electricity due to unpaid bills.

The power companies have issued an advisory and have asked people not to reconnect their power connections. The companies say that not only is it illegal, but there is also a risk of electrocution. On the other hand, the Congress has claimed that the fast by Kejriwal is just a political stunt to garner votes.
