The Indian army has been monitoring its officers to see if they have been posting any pictures of the army in their units in uniform or with their weapons.

The officers have now been directed not to join the sites as there was a fear that vital information could be leaked out to unwanted sources. If any officer is noticed violating the rules then strict action could be taken against the offenders.

Facebook has been facing legal action by the Indian government for the permitting the posting of obscene content on its network. The social networking site is among 12 other websites that have also been sued by the Indian government. The teams of these websites have argued that there cannot be any way to censor the content as there are millions of users across the globe. The action came after the government warned the websites to block objectionable content a few months back.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google and social networking site Facebook are among many of the websites which have been dragged to court by the Indian government for derogatory content. For the time being, the websites can take a breather as the hearing of the case has been adjourned till February 2, 2012.

The petition has been adjourned by the Delhi High court after the websites approached the Higher court as their executives were challenged by the lower court by issuing summons. The ongoing fight involving the Government of India and the social networking sites has these days caught a lot of attention.

At least 21 websites, which include the popular ones like Google and Facebook have been sued by the government for posting objectionable content on their sites. A lower court had earlier called all the executives of all the 21 websites to appear before the court on March 13, 2012.

The websites, in their defense, stated that they were not responsible for the content and that the users were actually responsible for the alleged objectionable content. The companies even stated that there wasn’t any way that the content could be screened before it went live. Some of the websites even stated that the social networking sites were a good way to express the views of the individuals.

Asia Bizz: With the introduction of the new Timeline feature on the social networking site Facebook, not everyone is happy with the new feature. On the other hand, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said that the new Timeline is a new way to express who a person really is – which has sparked a debate on the site.

Many users now want their old ways to express themselves. The people who have adopted the new Timeline are unsatisfied and do not have a way to get back their old profile pages.

Not many people are aware that this can be done by accessing the page on the older versions of the Internet Explorer of Microsoft. As Facebook is phasing out support for the older browsers, the new Timeline will now be available on the older versions like the Internet Explorer 7 and 6.

The experience on the older browsers will be less optimal. Moreover, for users who are able to view their old profile, it does not mean that their friends will also view the same. The friends who are using the latest browser will be viewing the profile in the Timeline view, no matter what the user is seeing it as. Some of the users still use the older version of the Internet explorer. Google even announced that they will stop support for the older versions of the browsers.

Asia Bizz: An Indian IIT student at Kanpur, who is part of M Tech (Computer Science and Engineering), has allegedly been offered the most lucrative job offer package by the social networking giant Facebook. At the ongoing campus placements going on at the IIT Kharagpur, reports alleged that Siddharth Agarwal has been offered a Rs. 70 lakh per annum package.

The registrar of IIT K, Sanjeev Kashelkar, said that student Siddharth Agarwal has been offered the package near Rs 70 lakhs. Kashelkar added that the social networking site has earlier offered high packages to other students, but this one is the highest till now.

The registrar refused to reveal the actual amount. Last week, Facebook is reported to have offered a similar package to a student of IIT K. The placement process at the IIT started on December 2, 2011.

More than 950 graduates will be trying for jobs in some of the high profile companies like the GE, Infosys, Microsoft and TCS. It was reported that on the first day itself, more than 100 students were placed with 15 students who were picked by Microsoft. So far more than 400 students have been placed. In the upcoming days more than 200 companies are expected to visit the campus for placements till December 22.

Asia Bizz: After the reports of hacking of the profiles in India, social networking site Facebook said there weren’t any reports of hacking of profiles in India. On November 16, 2011, many reports of tampering with the profile pictures were received, to which Facebook said that the reports were inaccurate.

One of the executives of Facebook said that the reports were not true and that the user’s photographs were not transferred to any other website. The social network even clarified that no accounts have been compromised.

On Wednesday, many reports claimed that the profile pictures were tampered and were changed with vulgar images and were sent as feeds to the friends and family. However, some of the aggrieved Facebook users continue to pour in complaints and some of them even said that they would quit the social network.

Some of the users even expressed displeasure, as they faced difficulty in answering security questionnaire. On November 17, 2011, the social network came out openly about the hostile comments and uproar created by the Facebook users.
Moreover, weblinks to their morphed pornographic pictures were sent as feeds to the friends and family. Even the cyber crime department has received calls regarding the mass hacking incident.

The recent report said that there were more than 50 posts on the social networking site which stated that they would quit Facebook for ever after they were embarrassed in front of their friends an family. Another report has claimed that the social network has already identified those who are responsible for the mass hack.

Facebook has said that they are currently working with their legal team to ensure that appropriate consequences could follow. A statement was released by the social networking site after many pictures of porn and violence, including fake pictures of celebrities like Justine Bieber, were sent as feeds on many of the profiles of the users. The authorities at Facebook say that they have drastically reduced the damage caused by a spam attack. The hackers had taken the advantage of a browser’s vulnerability. Palo Alto, California-based Facebook said that protecting the people of malicious content is a top priority for them.

Asia Bizz: Social networking website, Facebook, has recently announced that it would end the daily deals program. The daily deals program had started testing four months back and has left Groupon to continue the monopoly in the market.

Facebook, in a statement, said that there is a lot of power in the social approach driving people in the local business. The statement added that they have learnt a lot from the test and will continue to evaluate to make the service even better.

The social network had launched the Facebook Deals offer in the month of April and had brought competition to the daily deals leader Groupon and the rival LivingSocial. The programs were debuted the five cities Atlanta, Dallas, Austin, San Diego and San Francisco.

Meanwhile, Google has shown its desire to deal in the daily deals market, after its unsuccessful attempt to buy Groupon last year. The search engine had attempted to buy it for $5.3 billion. But at the same time, the market share of the Chicago-based company had shot to $25 billion, after which it had prompted to spurn the offer of Google. The decision is now left to the daily deals leaders LivingSocial and Groupon to consolidate their position in the market.

Asia Bizz: A new survey by mobile app developers has said that Google+ which is the latest in the social networking market has the capability to catch up with Facebook.
Asia Bizz: After the triple terror blasts that had rocked Mumbai, India on 13th July 2011, the phone networks were reported to have been jammed. Several anxious people were trying to reach out their friends and family to know about their well being. In such a situation, social networking sites had come to the rescue of many people.

Facebook and Twitter were the major websites which was used by the population of Mumbai to find help and also to know about the whereabouts of the friends and family members. One of the college students had said that she was trying to contact her friends but was not able to do so.

She had then logged in to Facebook and was relieved, when she saw all her friends online. The social network was much better for the people to reach out to others instead of jamming the phone network.

A spreadsheet was made with a long list of people who are willing to offer a lift, or donate blood or offer a place to stay, and uploaded on Twitter. Moreover, a blog was also started in the year 2005, Mumbai Help, which was updated with useful contact details. With the help of the social network many people were offered lifts to those who could not get taxis and accommodation.
