Through the programme, women entrepreneurs will be provided various web based technologies in their day to day business.

This will help the women to increase their outreach to the customer base. Google, in a statement, said that they are very excited to announce the launch of WEOW programme in the country as a targeted business diversity programme for the women entrepreneurs.

The new programme from Google has a five circle approach which begins by building an online presence and gradually moves towards collaborating. This continues with connecting with the customers and also promoting their organization along with tracking and optimizing the online presence. The statement from Google further added that they soon realized that women were the true entrepreneurs and were clearly not afraid of trying something new. Still many of them were not aware that there are various products that can be used to take out the full potential of the internet.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google’s Android platform has definitely become one of the most popular platforms; surprisingly it has also become popular in a price sensitive market like India. The Apple iOS based platforms are still considered as the most expensive for the main stream consumption in the Indian market, but this is not the case of Android.

A research company stated that Google also dominates the mobile app terrain in India. The report added that the Indian smartphone users spend more than 40 percent of their time in data app usage.

Moreover, out of all the apps in the market, the majority of 25 percent are made by Google. And the most used apps from the Google’s portfolio is the Android market followed by Gmail and Gtalk and then the rest.

However, the most popular app isn’t of Google. The popular social networking site Facebook recently launched its app on the Android and iOS devices some time back and on Android, it is the most popular social networking app. Meanwhile Nimbuzz is also added to the list and is the second most popular social networking app which is primarily used for chat. In terms of the other categories the GPS, email, video and search apps dominate the terrain.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google – which is one of the biggest web portals in the world and has been sued by the Indian government – said on January 26, 2012 that it cannot censor or monitor everything that is on its websites. The internet giant has been sued for posting objectionable and obscene content.

Google and Facebook are among 21 companies which have been summoned to appear in person in one of the lower courts of Delhi on March 13, 2012. Nikesh Arora, the Chief business officer of Google, said that he is hoping there would be a balanced debate over the issue and eventually the right thing is going to happen.

The companies, in response, have challenged the summons in the High Court and the hearing of which is due on February 2, 2012. Arora added that they cannot censor the web	and cannot even censor the ability of people to express themselves around the world.

The Chief business officer also argued that the Indian government is not only asking to censor to censor the web in India, but is also asking to censor the entire world wide web, which does not have any borders. In the last hearing, the companies said that there wasn’t any method to screen the content before it was posted online.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google and social networking site Facebook are among many of the websites which have been dragged to court by the Indian government for derogatory content. For the time being, the websites can take a breather as the hearing of the case has been adjourned till February 2, 2012.

The petition has been adjourned by the Delhi High court after the websites approached the Higher court as their executives were challenged by the lower court by issuing summons. The ongoing fight involving the Government of India and the social networking sites has these days caught a lot of attention.

At least 21 websites, which include the popular ones like Google and Facebook have been sued by the government for posting objectionable content on their sites. A lower court had earlier called all the executives of all the 21 websites to appear before the court on March 13, 2012.

The websites, in their defense, stated that they were not responsible for the content and that the users were actually responsible for the alleged objectionable content. The companies even stated that there wasn’t any way that the content could be screened before it went live. Some of the websites even stated that the social networking sites were a good way to express the views of the individuals.

Asia Bizz: A day after the Indian government announced that it will be taking action against all the social networking sites in the country for the objectionable content, Google India had its own opinion. The search engine giant told Delhi High court that blocking their website was not an option as India is a democratic country and that it does not have a ‘totalitarian’ regime like China.

Advocate NK Paul, who appeared for Google India, said that the issue relates to the constitutional issue of freedom of speech and expression and suppressing it wasn’t an option at all as this right separates the country from the totalitarian regime. During the last hearing, Justice Suresh Kait had warned the social networking sites including Google saying that the websites can be blocked like in China if they fail to create a mechanism which will have a check on the objectionable material.

During the initial arguments, Kaul said that internet is a global system which will have billions of users which also includes companies, governments as well as private officials. Kaul provided an instance regarding the issue saying that for an online search for the word ‘virgin’ has 82.30 crore search results within 0.33 and blocking all of them would deprive the users of the required information.

Vinay Goel the Director of Google India said that the internet bus was started in the month of February 2009 and now the bus is all set to tour the state. Goel added that they hope to create awareness about the internet as they believe that constant effort would enable the common man to utilize the knowledge.

The target of Google is to familiarize the first time users with the internet as the bus will be posted at the public places and also outside the schools. Apart from the capital Kolkata, the bus would also travel to Kharagpur, Asansol, Ulberia, Durgapur, Haldia, Chandannagar, Purulia and Bankura.

Goel shared that the bus has already travelled 11 states and has covered 130 towns and touch more than 6.5 million people. As a result of the campaign by Google, they found that some 30 percent of the internet bus users have now started using the internet. At present 82 million people in India use internet out of which 37 percent are from the smaller towns.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google has said that it is planning to open three data centres in Asia. Late September, the company said that it would be opening centres which would cost more than $200 million due to the increasing number of internet users in the region.

Google had also taken the decision to open the centres due to competition from rivals. Till now, the company operated data centres in Europe as well as US, but still does not have any in Asia.

Google will now open centres in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan on a total of 22.6 hectares of land. The new centres will help local customers with better services in the region and would be equipped with house computer and telecom systems along with high security and back up power supplies.

Taj Meadows, the Asia Pacific policy communications manager of Google has said that the number of users and also the amount of internet use is increasing day by day in Asia than no where else in the world. Taj added that a large number of users are coming online everyday. In Asia, the company has faced tough competition especially in the China market where, the domestic search service including Baidu ia a prominent name.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google has begun its Street View service at the Amazon river. Google is now trying hard to reach the remotest places in the world with the Street View.

The service will now photograph the Amazon river as well as Rio Negro river in the northwest of Brazil. The photographing is being carried out in partnership with the charity organization ‘Foundation for Sustainable Amazon’ (FAS).

Reports state that local people will be trained by Google to collect pictures. The company will then leave the equipment for the images to be collected. The images will then be joined together, so that the people would get a 360 degree view of the area.

Two years back, FAS had approached the search engine with plans to digitalize the images of the Amazon Basin in order to showcase the poor global sustainability efforts as well as the wide spread deforestation. The project leader of the FAS, Gabriel Ribenboim, has said that it has become very important to show the world the way of life of the traditional population. Meanwhile, it is a challenge for Google as the equipment were designed for the roads and not for the rivers.
