Google launches Vault App in India

Search engine giant, Google has on May 8, 2012 launched its app Vault, specially for the business customers in India. The new app offers a solution for managing information which is critical to its customers and also helps in preserving important data.

The company has also claimed that the new app can reduce the cost of litigation, compliance action, regulatory. The new app can also be added to an enterprise Google Apps for an additional $5 per user for a month.

The search engine giant also said that the Vault is different from the traditional solutions and does not require costly IT environment and can also be deployed in minutes. The new app offers security, reliability of Google Apps to information governance and also ease of use.

Jack Halprin, the head of eDiscovery, Google in a company statement said, “Businesses of all sizes need to be prepared for the unexpected. In today’s environment, using Vault to manage, archive and preserve your data can help protect your business”. The Vault would also provide its Google Apps customers extended management as well as information governance capabilities to proactively archive, preserve and retain Gmail and on-the-record chats.

Google to face anti-trust probe in India

An anti-trust probe in to the search engine giant Google’s online advertising practices. The probe has been launched by the Competition Commission of India on May 7, 2012 after deepening its legal woes in India.

The secretary of the commission, SL Bunker said, “The probe would take at least a couple of months to complete and was in response to a complaint from match-making website Bharatmatrimony.com.” Bunker added that they are investigating Google and that the matrimonial website has filed information which is being investigated to see if it can be verified.

In the month of February media reports said that Bharatmatrimony.com complained that Google abused its dominance by engaging in discriminatory and retaliatory practices relating to AdWords. A statement from the company said, “We have requested the Commission to investigate Google’s practices and impose remedial measures to protect competition”.

On the other hand a spokesperson from Google said that they did not receive any communication over the matter and declined to comment further. The Competition Commission of India has the power to impose fines on the companies which are found guilty of violating the competition law. Moreover, Google has been named among the 18 other internet firms for obscene content in a criminal case.

Google Doodle observes May Day, misses Indian homepage

Search engine giant Google is today on May 1, 2012 observing Labour Day. Google has brought a new Doodle for its users but it is not available on the home page of Google India.

The May Day Doodle is currently available in the countries like Russia, Bahrain, China and Philippines. To view the Doodle, the users can visit google.co.hk, google.ru, google.ph and google.bh.

The Labour day also known as May day is an annual holiday , which is observed to celebrate the economic and social achievements of the workers. However, the day is not observed on May 1, in every country as they have their own days to honour the labourers.

Like US and Canada observes the day on the first Monday of September. The Labour day was originated in the labour union movement, specifically from the right hour day movement which advocated eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation and eight hours of rest. The Doodle created by the search engine shows a female worker lifting the metallic logo of Google, representing the power of labour, while the toolbox lying on the background. Google is for years known for creating the most creative and effective Doodles for its home pages to observe various days.

Facebook, Google and YouTube to be forced to set up servers in India?

On April 20, 2012, the UPA government indicated an urge to regulate and remove India-specific, abusive, provocative and communal content on Facebook, Google and YouTube to Jane Holl Lute, the visiting deputy secretary for homeland security. The Indian team lead by R K Singh said that inaction on the part of the US can lead to force New Delhi to pressurise the service providers to have servers based in the country.

Critical issues like home grown terror, megacity policing, megacity, capacity building and fake currency racket were discussed by Lute and Singh. The discussion was a part of the ongoing homeland security dialogue.

Lute recognised the Indian concerns. A course for three days is being organized in Washington with the US Secretive Service so as to help the Indian police to tackle the fake currency racket in the country.

Singh even expressed concerns over the objectionable content on the websites and also wanted a real-time action from the companies based in the US. The home ministry officials have also said that the US homeland security department institute must incorporate a procedure which removes the malafied content within a specific time period. Singh told that if the US operating procedures are not in place then New Delhi might have to force the service providers to set up servers in India.

Google To Set Up Data Centre in Taiwan

Asia Bizz: Popular search engine giant Google Inc. will soon have a data centre in Taiwan. The new data centre in Taiwan will be the third in Asia, after Hong Kong and Singapore.

Google came up with the idea of a new Data centre to meet the growing online needs across the region, the company said on April 3, 2012. The search engine giant will build three data centres and will be investing a total of $700 million.

The new data centres will provide users with faster, as well as more reliable online access to the various Google products. Google recently broke the ground at the western country of Changhua.

Daniel Alegre, the Asia Pacific president of Google at the ground breaking ceremony said that the company intended to help meet the great potential of the internet use in the continent. Alegre added that more internet users are coming online everyday than anywhere else in the world. The president of Google Asia-Pacific added that people in the continent are looking for entertainment, information, business opportunities and better ways to connect with family and friends.

Google already has six data centres in the US and two in Europe. The data centres are facilities where there are thousands of computers that store and serve plenty of information.

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google is celebrating the 125th anniversary of a Spanish painter and sculptor Juan Gris on March 23, 2012 with an apt Doodle. Gris studied supernatural drawing at the Escuela de Artes y Manufactura in Madrid, Spain.

Gris is also named along with the great names in the world of art like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He was also considered as the third musketeer of Cubism. Picasso and Braque were also considered as the pioneers of Cubism.

Cubism is a 20th century avant-garde art movement. In Wikipedia, it is mentioned that in cubist artworks, the objects are broken up, analyzed and reassembled in an abstracted form, instead of depicting the objects from one point of view.

The Doodle on Google’s home page has shown musical instruments, notations and also other cubist imagery placed in an angular style. In the year 1906, Gris moved to Paris where he adopted the style of fellow countryman Picasso. But by the year 1912 he developed his personal visual style in Cubism with his paintings which often featured bold colors and collage techniques.

Google’s Doodles are known for the decorative changes that are made to the logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries and the lives of the popular artists and scientists.

Asia Bizz: The grandmaster of origami, Akira Yoshizawa, was paid tribute by search engine giant Google through its Doodle on his 101th birthday on March 14, 2012. The paper folding skills of origami was celebrated by Doodle to mark the 101th anniversary of Yoshizawa.

Akira was the person who turned origami from children’s pastime in to a serious art form and was also known for his innovative folding techniques. The logo of Google has been designed that show the letters in paper folding design to mimic the popular art form.

Yoshiwara was born in the year 1911 to dairy farming parents and moved to Tokyo at the young age of 13. The origami expert started working in a tool factory. During his early 20s, he was promoted to a technical draftsman and used origami that was a skill acquired as a child.

He used to teach younger employees the basic geometry. In the mid 30s, he left the factory and went on to pursue his passion for the art and worked on it for more than two decades. The origami expert lived in poverty and sold preserved fish from door to door. But in the year 1951, one Japanese magazins commissioned him to fold the 12 signs of Japanese zodiac to illustrate its next issue and this pushed him to an international level.

Google Wallet Likely To Be Introduced In India

Asia Bizz: After the launch of the Airtel Money service in India, the search engine giant is planning to bring its mobile wallet services in the Asian country. Airtel recently launched the service in India for its subscribers with the help of which they can make transactions with ease over mobile phones.

Reports say that the search engine is forcing Android App developers to adopt Google Wallet and failure to do so might result in getting their apps suspended from the Android marketplace. The Google Android market place is also known as Google Play.

Google’s Wallet service allows the users to store credit cards, gift cards and loyalty cards. The system also allows redeeming sales promotions on their mobile phone.

What does the service mean to Indian users? Google Wallet will be a service for those who want to buy applications from the Android market and ultimately this will lead to full fledged roll out of the services in the country. With the introduction of Google Wallet the transaction charges will be higher, but for users, it will mean lesser transaction time and less worries as the Android devices already are linked to the Google account, with which even the wallet service is linked.

Frenchman Drags Google to Court for Urination Images

Asia Bizz: Google’s Street view has been sued recently by a Frenchman. On March 1, 2012, the search engine giant was taken to court for showing him urinating in his yard.

The man has argued that this has made him a laughing stock of his village in the rural northwest France. The middle-aged man has demanded the removal of the photo from the website as the locals have recognized him despite his face being blurred.

The Frenchman has demanded 10,000 Euros as damages. The lawyer of the man, Jean Noel, said that everyone has a right to a degree of secrecy and in this particular case it is more amusing than serious. Noel added that even if he was caught kissing a woman other than his wife, then it would have had the same issue.

The StreetView of Google covers some 30 countries and is available in France since 2008. The service shows the pictures taken through the camera mounted on the vehicles. The picture of the man was taken in the year 2010 and the man had then though that the closed gate would have hidden him. But the lens had caught the man from above his gate as the vehicle passed.

Google removes objectionable content from Indian domains

Asia Bizz: Search engine giant Google Inc has removed content from its India domains after the orders from the Indian court. Google removed the content that was deemed to be objectionable by the New Delhi District Court.

Gaurav Bhaskar, a spokesperson from Google India, said that material from the India search results, Blogger, YouTube and the social networking site Orkut was blocked. The content was deleted from the domains .in and .Co.in, while it will remain accessible from other countries.

Bhaskar added that Google cannot take down the content that appears on the websites owned by the other companies and individuals. The government of India is now stepping towards the scrutiny of internet postings as well as mobile communications as it tries to eliminate provocative comments.

The company in a statement said that they believe that the access to information is the foundation of a free and prosperous society. The statement further added that where the content is illegal or breaks the terms of their terms of service, they will continue to remove it. Bhaskar also said that the deletion from Google is in accordance with the company’s policy of disabling illegal content on its property to comply with the local laws. The next hearings will be held on February 14 and 15.
