Pakistan and India tighten security at Wagah border

After receiving a threat letter from the banned Lashkar – e – Taiba, the security has been increased by India and Pakistan at the Wagah border. The threatening letter from Laskar – e – Taiba mentions that it would blow up the check post which has been recently opened to encourage bilateral trade.

The multi crore rupee integrated check post has been threatened to be blown up as Pakistan has increased trade with India even before resolving the issue of Kashmir dispute. Sources have revealed to a daily newspaper that they have received reports about the banned groups which are planning to attack some of the public personalities or key sites.

Concerned authorities have been informed about the threat so that adequate security measures could be taken. The Border Security forces of India along with Pakistani authorities have tightened the security at the integrated check post and have also deployed rescue teams, ambulances and ire brigade vehicles on alert to deal in an emergency.

A spokesperson from the Pakistan Rangers, Mahboob Hussain that is responsible for the security along the border said that the trade points at the Wagah border were under the army’s control and that the security at these locations were optimum.

India not likely to face drought or floods this year

It has been predicted that India this year is unlikely to be hit by a drought or heavy downpours that lead to floods during this year’s monsoon. DS Pai, the head of the country’s long range weather forecaster informed about the positive forecast.

Such a news is indeed a relief from the agricultural point of view as there will not be any threat from the adverse weather. For two years in a row India has recorded a bumper foodgrain harvest and now any fall in the marketing year from July 1 could jeopardized the food security programme.

Though the monsoon rains is expected to be normal, the weather office says that there are also chances of an EI Nino event which is expected to occur between June and September. The EI Nino event is a condition with lower rainfall, which usually results in drought like conditions.

The Chief of the National Climatic Centre said, “An El Nino generally weakens monsoon rain, but as of now, it is neutral. Even if it builds up, it will likely be weak”. The four month long rainfall accounts for 70% of the rainfall in India which feeds 60% of the farmland. Moreover agriculture employs more than half of the workforce in India.

India to Continue Purchase of Crude Oil from Iran

Asia Bizz: Without violating any international law, India will continue to import oil from Iran. India’s oil minister revealed on March 23, 2012 that the country has requested the United States and the European Union to take in to account their oil needs.

At the Asia Gas Partnership Summit, Jaipal Reddy told the reporters that they have a systematic plan for receiving oil from Iran. However Reddy did not elaborate on the issue.

On Tuesday, the United States gave its exemptions from its crippling financial sanctions to Japan as well as 10 EU nations. It has earlier said that it cut purchases of Iranian crude oil, but then left the major Asian countries India and China exposed to the risk of such steps.

Reddy added that they continue to receive representations from the US and other countries and that with respect to their sentiments, they have requested to appreciate their needs. For Iran, India is the second largest client after China and even Tehran used to supply about 12 percent of the south Asian country’s needs. This would be worth some $11 billion per year. Reddy even assured that there will not be any supply shortage.

India secures second position of Facebook users in the world

Asia Bizz: Earlier it was Indonesia which claimed the second position leaving behind UK in terms of having the second largest number of Facebook users in the world after the US. But now it is India which has claimed the second position and left behind Indonesia.

As per February 1, 2012, India has a total number of 43,497, 980 Facebook users, while Indonesia has 43, 060, 360 Facebook users. In the past one year, Facebook has registered several users from India.

On January 1, 2011, the social network had a total of 16,915,900 users from India and by the end of 2011 the total exceeded 41 users which is a 144% growth rate. Within a year, the country jumped from number six position to number two in the Total Facebook Users Global List.

On the other hand, even the growth of the number of users from Brazil has been quite impressive. The South American country is now the fourth largest nation which jumped from number 13. In February 2011, Brazil had 13,409, 220 Facebook users and in February 1, 2012 the total number of users reached to 37,907,400 with a growth rate of 183%. However, US continues to be at the number one position in the world.

India least prepared for probable cyber attacks : Survey

Asia Bizz: A new survey has revealed that India is among the few countries in the world, along with Romania and Mexico, which is not yet prepared to defend itself against the emerging cyber attacks. The survey which has been backed by McAfee cyber defense and it has mentioned that countries like Finland, Israel and Sweden are in the lead in terms of ‘cyber-readiness’.

The survey states that countries like UK, US, Germany, Spain and France rank favourably in the survey. The rankings in the survey are based on the experts perceptions of a country’s cyber – readiness as well as the ability to deal with the range of threats and attacks.

The survey has also taken into consideration basic security measures like adequate firewalls and anti-virus protection. It also includes more complex matters like well informed governance and education.

Raj Samani, the chief technology officer of McAfee, said that the subjectiveness of the report is the biggest strength. Samani added that the report has also considered the perception of cyber readiness by the individuals who understand and work in cyber security on a day-in and day-out basis. The report has also stressed on the need for greater information sharing making law and also enforcement of more powerful laws to combat cyber attacks.

India calls Taiwan makers to bid for Aakash tablet PC

Asia Bizz: Since the Indian government is planning to launch the second generation of Aakash Tablet PCs, it is now soliciting Taiwan based PC makers to participate in the bidding. Sandeep Yadav, the convener of the project says that it will be possible to lower the selling price of the Aakash tablet PCs to US$35.

Earlier, the international bidding for the new Aakash tablet PC project was planned in the month of December 2011, but it is expected to get delayed to January 2012, the industry sources said. At present, the shipments of the new Aakash tablet PC have reached up to 8,000 units for the trial use by the students.

The government of India is also planning to ship 200 million units of the new Aakash in the upcoming years so as to connect all the major universities in the country. The new Aakash will be unveiled in the month of January 2012 or February 2012.

The first generation of the Aakash tablets are manufactured by the UK based Datawind. 10 to 20% of the components of the tablets are supplied by Taiwan makers. The tablet which is the world’s cheapest tablet has become more and more popular in the country and is at present in high demand.

Asia Bizz: Seems like Anna Hazare will have a helping hand now. On Thursday, September 28, the Indian government said that it is now essential to institutionalize the e-governance system which would help in reducing the human interface and would also keep a check on corruption.

Kapil Sibal, the Indian telecom minister said that it is important to have a law to ensure that the corrupt people are punished and dealt with expeditiously and also very strongly so that a fear can be created in the minds of the people who try to violate the law. Sibal added that just the law is not enough and that there must be a system that would reduce the human element in the delivery of public services.

The minister said that the e-governance would help in eliminating human effort in delivering the public services. He gavce the example of Income Tax Refunds, when sometimes the officials demand money to give a refund.

It was suggested by the minister that such things can be avoided by introducing e-governance and reducing human interference. Through e-governance, one can be assured that the tax refunds has been finalized and is delivered to the account. So the human effort is exempted and corruption is also avoided.

Asia Bizz: The Indian market will soon have a low cost tablet, which will be available for just $35. The Government of India has supported the new low-cost tablet project, after a wait of more than six months.

The tablet, which has been named â€˜Sakshatâ€™, is expected to be launched by the end of this month. A similar low-cost laptop was manufactured by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which will run on Linux OS. The $100 laptop will be developed by the HCL Technologies.

â€˜Sakshatâ€™ will come with an inbuilt keyboard, 7 inch touch screen, multimedia content, video conferencing facility, 2 GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, USB port and a 32 GB hard drive. Moreover, the tablet will also be supporting internet browsing, Open Office and SciLab.

Reports have stated that the government has decided to deliver 10,000 â€˜Sakshatâ€™ tablets to the IIT Rajasthan, India by the end of June 2011. The tablet will cost at just Rs. 2,200. In the upcoming months, more than 90,000 tablets will be ready for launch. The government has also planned to further reduce the cost of the tablet by 50%, after which the tablet will be costing at just Rs. 1,100. It is time to wait and watch if the new low cost tablet manages to dominate the market.

India is now becoming a giant economy and a key player in the world market. The GDP of India rose to 8.8% in the second quarter for 2010. Positive signs for the Indian economy, as it has been noticed by the experts that India’s economy rose the fastest in the last quarter in the past two years.

India is said to the be 11th biggest economy in the world but is the second fastest growing economy in the world, just behind its neighbour China. According to the Indian statistics, strong development in the Industrial and Mining sector has helped to boost the Indian economy.

The Industrial output in India rose by 12% and in the mining sector it rose by 9%. The Reserve Bank Of India has stated that it had seen an annual growth of 8.5% steadily. The main priority of the Reserve Bank is to curb the ongoing inflation, which peaked at 11% last month. Interest rates have been increased by the banks to contain the inflation, but it could slow down the growth of the Indian economy in the coming months. But even thought there has been a rise in the interest rates there hasn’t been much change in the distribution of loans, the Indian customer is hardly affected with the hiked interest rates.

The Institute conducts 3 levels of professional examinations- Licentiate, Associate ship and Fellowship twice in a year. Successful candidates are awarded certificates and Diplomas at the end of every academic year. The registrations for the examinations are done through the associated institutes and can also be done via the internet.

Every year, the examination is conducted in almost 120 centers across India and even including some centers overseas. Currently, examinations are conducted in both Hindi and English.
