Microsoft launches its own social network So.cl

In a time when the social networking sites are becoming popular, software giant Microsoft has launched its own ‘So.cl’ which is an experimental site which brings together search, social networking and media sharing to promote learning. The new website looked similar to Google +.

The website was initially aimed at helping the students to share the information for research purpose and was only available in some of the US colleges last December. But now the site is available for everyone.

The software giant said that it expects the students to continue using Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, as well as the search engines like Google, Bing and other tools. But Microsoft also hopes to encourage students to re-imagine how their everyday communication and learning tools can be improved.

The tools can be improved by learning, researching and sharing in their everyday lives. The new social networking site helps to connect with people on the basis of what they are searching. For instance, the user can sear5ch for a query and tag it on the board and also check what others have found and tagged on the related queries. With the popularity of Facebook and Twitter, it seems like Microsoft is trying to make its own presence in the social network.

Asia Bizz: American tech giant Microsoft has announced its biggest ever customer for cloud computing on April 12, 2012. Cloud computing is a software that hosts on behalf of the clients and delivers over the internet.

The American company has won a contract to provide free services to a major Indian Education body. In the recent time, Microsoft has been entering in to the world of cloud computing due to tough competition against other major players like Google.

The US-based software giant said that it would provide the Live@edu communication and collaboration software to 7 million students apart from half a million teachers through the deal with the All India Council for Technical Education.

As a part of the education initiative of Microsoft, the service will be provided for free. The service includes email, instant messaging, storage and Office Web Applications. Cloud computing is inexpensive and simple as it removes the need to spend time and money on the installation of the software and managing servers. The large players like Microsoft and Google aim at the major government departments.

In the month of June 2011, Microsoft unveiled the revamped online version of its hugely profitable Office software suite.

Asia Bizz: South Korean Electronic giant Samsung announced on on March 1, 2012 that it has developed an upgraded solution along with Microsoft. The upgraded server solution has been developed to provide the customers with a system of high level of performance as well as efficiency.

The new server solution is known as the ‘Green Server Solution’ that utilizes 20 nanometer class Double Data Rate 3 Memory chip of Samsung and solid state drives together with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper V. The new system helped in boosting the memory configurations twice as fast that consumed 50 percent less power.

The executive vice president of memory sales and marketing at Samsung, Hong Wan Hoon said that with the help of the Green Server Solution which combines the two companies, their customers can enjoy a high level of performance as well as efficiency in their server systems.

Wan Hoon added that Samsung will step up the collaboration with Microsoft and will continue to develop the green computing solutions for more effective levels of the IT investment. The earlier system of Samsung used 40 nanometer class DDR3 and a hard drive disk. The development has come five months after the collaboration of Samsung and Microsoft.

Asia Bizz: American software giant Microsoft has recently opened its new global delivery centre in India’s IT hub Bangalore. The global delivery centre has been opened to provide consulting and enterprise services to the clients worldwide. The centre at Bangalore is the second in the country. Earlier, a similar facility was opened by the software company in the year 2005 in Hyderabad.

Amit added that the local teams here work on the leading edge products and technologies including the Office 365 and Windows 7 deployment. The Microsoft Services Global Delivery is known for its highly mature delivery process for the global deployments. Sircar also added that they hope to maintain and improve this reputation for excellence with a group of highly motivated people in Bangalore.

Asia Bizz: The biggest internet rivals of the world have joined hands to improvise search results on the Internet. Google has collaborated with giants Yahoo and Microsoft for a project called schema.org. The new project will help in improvising the search results on the web.

The three giants have launched the site schema.org , which have common HTML tags, which are used by the webmasters to look in to the structured data in to the site. The announcement was madeby Google on its blog on Thursday that the new initiative will support a common vocabulary on the web pages.

The new initiative will help the site owners to learn about the structured data, so that their sites can appear on the big search engines. The schema.org aims in providing the website owners with mark up for their pages.

Usually, the sites are generated from the structured data, which is stored in the database. But when the structured data is converted in to HTML format, then the tracing of the original structured data becomes difficult. The search engines would now be able to have access to the original structured data. In the year 2006, the trio had come together to make sitemaps.org that had helped to improvise the sitemap protocol.
