The world’s tallest communications tower and second highest building, the Tokyo Sky Tree was on May 22, 2012. The tower measures 634 meters in height and the tourism officials hope that it would be a big draw for the visitors.

The tower has two observations decks apart from restaurants, office space and a vertigo inducing glass floor which will allow the visitors to look straight down. One of the observations decks is at 350 meters and the other is at 450 meters above the ground.

The surrounding area is known as the Tokyo Sky Tree Town and has an open air market with cherry blossom and red tree pine trees. While the rest of the Sky Tree Town features office buildings, aquarium and 300 tenants in all.

The Tokyo Sky Tree is operated by Tobu Railway Co. The operator expects hundreds of thousands of visitors per week. So as to control the number of visitors, admission will be given only by reserved tickets only till July 11. The construction of the tower began in July 2008. It is the world’s second tallest manmade structure and is beaten by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai of 828 meters. About 580,000 workers were engaged to construct the structure, which cost 65 billion yen for the tower alone.

Asia Bizz: After the launch of Apple’s new iPad, hundreds of faithful iPad 3 lovers lined up in Tokyo on March 16, 2012 for a chance to buy the device. The sales of the much awaited iPad began at 8 am local time and many of the blue shirted employees counted down t he final seconds at the Ginza shopping district.

Several reporters and prospective buyers thronged the shop to catch a glance of the new iPad and crowded the main door. More than 400 shoppers streamed inside the shop to buy the device which is priced at ¥42,800 for the cheapest model.

After the launch of the iPad 2 last year in April, many rivals came in to the market to show-off their devices against the iPad. Some of the major companies who introduced their devices include Toshiba and Sony. Unfortunately none of the major companies came even close to the iPad.

A 19-year-old university student, Ryo Watanabe said that he lined up 36 hours before the device went on sales , so that he could be the first one to buy it at the Ginza store. Watanabe also talked to the reporters while he carried his new iPad 3 in a new box.

Asia Bizz: The first load of the tsunami debris from the Iwate Prefecture was received by the Tokyo Metropolitan government on 3rd November 2011. More than 30 tons of the debris was sent by train from the Miyagi City and had arrived at the freight station in Shinagawa Ward in the morning.

After it was received the containers that was in six containers was divided in to combustible and non combustible containers. The classified containers were then loaded in to the trucks and were sent to three incineration and disposal facilities.

This was the first time that the debris from the Tohoku region that was destroyed by the natural disaster was sent outside the region for disposal. But before the debris were sent for disposal it was essential to assure that it did not contain any radio active material.

The Iwate and the Miyagi prefecture governments had then started testing the rubble for radio active elements last month. Tests were conducted to find if it had any hints of cesium or other radio active elements. Reports have said that Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures have huge amounts of debris that weigh more than 23 tons. The government has said that all the storage areas are full and that help from the other prefectures is needed to dispose the debris.

Toyota’s troubles multiplied its flagship Prius hybrid became the latest model to be targeted in an expanding web of US investigations. Toyota decided to recall an estimated 270,000 Prius cars in Japan and the US to fix the brake problem.

The Japanese automaker has been hit by a whirlwind of safety concerns around the globe and US authorities are scrambling to assure concerned public and angry lawmakers who have begun their own probes into vehicle defects.

The admission of a brake design flaw with its star green car and the subsequent US probe are major new blows that could not have come at a worse time for the world’s largest automaker.

Toyota was already under fire in the US for its handling of massive recalls affecting about eight million vehicles worldwide “more than its entire 2009 global sales of 7.8 million vehicles “due to accelerator trouble.

The latest developments were particularly worrying for Toyota because the Prius has created a global buzz and been Japan’s top-selling car since June “ahead of its main rival, Honda’s Insight.

Toyota had sold nearly 1.5 million Prius vehicles in 40 countries as of August 31 since the first version’s launch in 1997, making it the world’s most popular hybrid car.
