Yahoo approaches Indian HC for separate hearing

Asia Bizz: After Yahoo India Pvt Ltd challenged the Summons issued to it by the Magistrate for hosting objectionable content on the internet, the Delhi High Court sought response from the city police on the plea. Justice Suresh Kait – admitting the petition of Yahoo India for hearing – said the notice to be issued for February 10, 2012.

Yahoo India’s plea was allowed by the court and the case is expected to be heard separately. Advocate Arvind Nigam, appearing for Yahoo India, said that it is a case where the summons was issued without any application of mind by the trial court and that there wasn’t any material against Yahoo India.

Nigam added that the order and the complaint dealt with alleged objectionable material retrieved from the various websites including YouTube, Facebook, Blogspot, Zombie and Orkut and none of them pertained to Yahoo.

The advocate also argued that Yahoo is not a social networking site like the other accused companies in the case and that they only provide email and chat services. Nigam also added that no objectionable content has been attributed to them and their case must be different from the others.

Asia Bizz: Taiwanese-based entrepreneur Jerry Yang, who is also the co-founder of Yahoo, will soon be leaving the internet company. Yang will be leaving the company while it still tries its best to revive its revenue growth as well as the win over disgruntled shareholders.

Yang’s departure from the company was announced on January 18, 2012 and has signalled the end of an era at Yahoo. The internet company has spent the past years struggling to catch up with its competitor Google.

Google is a company which got early advice from Yang. The announcement of Yang leaving the company comes two weeks after the company hired PayPal executive Scott Thompson as the CEO. Thompson has become the fourth CEO for Yahoo Inc. in five years and will now be trying his hand in the company.

The responsibility is indeed a big one which could not be handled by Yang, who worked in the company for 18 months as the CEO of the company in 2007 and 2008. 43-year-old Yang endorsed Thompson in his resignation from the board of directors of Yahoo and in his resignation, he mentioned that it was time for him to pursue other interests outside of Yahoo.

Yahoo Mail introduces eight new regional Indian languages

Asia Bizz: Yahoo India has introduced eight new Indian languages for its mail service. The new move by Yahoo India has been taken to enhance the communication capabilities of online users in the multi-lingual Asian country.

Apart from Hindi and Bengali, Yahoo mail will also be available in Indian regional languages like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Gujarati. Yahoo, in a statement, revealed that Yahoo India announced the new version of Yahoo Mail in eight new regional languages.

The Yahoo Mail service is now available in 22 new languages, the statement added that the service has been rolled out simultaneously in 27 new markets including 16 new countries. So the total number of languages on Yahoo Mail becomes 46 in 70 markets in the world.

The company added that Yahoo Mail gives its users a safer, faster and easier online communications experience. The statement further added that Yahoo India aims at delivering personal, relevant and compelling experiences and reaching the users through the native languages is the major way to deliver all the benefits of Yahoo Mail.

The new Yahoo Mail also comes with various features like the applications that help people to be productive and organized. Moreover, the users can reply instantly to the messages from the Facebook.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo join hands to improvise search results

Asia Bizz: The biggest internet rivals of the world have joined hands to improvise search results on the Internet. Google has collaborated with giants Yahoo and Microsoft for a project called schema.org. The new project will help in improvising the search results on the web.

The three giants have launched the site schema.org , which have common HTML tags, which are used by the webmasters to look in to the structured data in to the site. The announcement was madeby Google on its blog on Thursday that the new initiative will support a common vocabulary on the web pages.

The new initiative will help the site owners to learn about the structured data, so that their sites can appear on the big search engines. The schema.org aims in providing the website owners with mark up for their pages.

Usually, the sites are generated from the structured data, which is stored in the database. But when the structured data is converted in to HTML format, then the tracing of the original structured data becomes difficult. The search engines would now be able to have access to the original structured data. In the year 2006, the trio had come together to make sitemaps.org that had helped to improvise the sitemap protocol.

Asia Bizz: Yahoo Inc. major search engine website after Google, is said to start shutting down its subsidy websites like Yahoo Delicious, Yahoo Buzz, AltaVista etc, as the company is on a move to streamline its infrastructure. Websites that will be soon chopped down include Yahoo Picks, AlltheWeb.com, Yahoo Bookmarks, MyBlogLog. Website planned to be merged include Fire Eagle, Upcoming, Sideline, FoxyTunes, Yahoo Events, and Yahoo People Search.

A yahoo spokeswoman stated that one of the main moves to streamline the company includes shutting down under-performing and unproductive products, and concentrate more on core business strategies which will help the company build strong revenue.

The Spokesperson also added that Yahoo has been consistently monitoring its products and has decided to shut down some selected websites that have proved to be unproductive for the company. Even though the company is looking forward to strong growth on the basis of shutting down incapable websites, many are just not happy with this decision of yahoo.
