On August 11, 2013, the Asian country of Japan experienced a severe heat wave, with temperatures going over 40 C for the second consecutive day. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the temperature went up to 40.6 C in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan and 40.4 C in Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture, western Japan.
The agency went on to say that temperatures went up to 35 C at 297 of 927 observation points across Japan and recorded 39.9 in Mobara, Chiba Prefecture, 39.8 C in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture and 39.5 C in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. Even in central Tokyo, the temperature reached 38.3 C.
The severe heat claimed lives of at least three people and three people who are taking part in a festival in the city of Kochi in Kochi Prefecture, along with five junior high school students in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture were taken to a hospital after they showed symptoms of heatstroke.
The agency also issued a severe heat alert for Monday, August 12, 2013 and covered all areas stretching from the Kanto-Koshin region in eastern and central Japan to the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan and urged the public to take precautions in order to prevent heatstroke.
