The World Wide Web – which was created by Tim Berners-Lee – is celebrating its 25th birthday on March 12, 2014, amidst reports of massive worldwide surveillance on almost all online activity, which have been revealed in 2013. In order to protect the freedoms that the World Wide Web has stood for, Berners-Lee has called for a Magna Carta-like bill of rights.
In a long interview, the creator of Internet said that the World Wide Web is being attacked by authorities who think that they can control people if they can control the Internet. The creator said, “We need a global constitution – a bill of rights”. He further argued that the rights of users are being infringed more and more on every side and the danger is that people are getting accustomed to it.
The 25th anniversary can be an opportunity to initiate a cause to take back the Internet to the hands of users around the world once again and define the web that they want to have in the upcoming 25 years. The initiative will be called ‘The Web We Want’ and the website says that in the past few years, citizens from across the globe have fought to stop bad laws and build a positive agenda for the web, which empowers everyone.
