Asia Bizz: In the upcoming years, India might soon have the world’s top selling high way capable electric car. Japanese car maker Nissan is looking forward towards the possibility of introducing an electric car for the Indian market.

Kiminobu Tokuyama, the MD and CEO of Nissan Motors, said that they are studying the feasibility of introducing the ‘Leaf’ in the Indian market. Tokuyama added that Nissan is known for innovation and that they have an aggressive plan to launch the product.

Globally, Nissan is the leading player in terms of the electric car segment. Last year, the company sold 21,000 Leaf  vehicles mostly in Japan and the US. In India, the Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle is the only electric car maker in the country.

The new Reva NXR by Mahindra is expected to be launched this year. On the other hand, there wasn’t any assurance of a timeline for the introduction of an electric car by Nissan MD as it depends on the kind of initiative government takes up to introduce the eco friendly vehicles. Tokuyama said that the automaker still needs more help with its infrastructure, along with support from the government. Nissan also plans to launch a compact car positioned below its Micra.
