Asia Bizz: Nandan M Nilekani, the chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on March 3, 2012 said that they would start enrolling 40 crore people for the issuance of the ‘Aadhaar’ numbers in the upcoming month. Nilekani added that the enrollment of about 40 crore people will begin in the month of April and about two crore people will be enrolled in a month.
So far, the UIDAI has enrolled 20 crore people out of which 13.5 crore have already been issued their ‘Aadhaar’ numbers. At present the department is busy clearing the backlog which is the remaining 6.5 crore people.
While talking about the process, Nilekani said that to get an ‘Aadhaar’ number, each person’s biometric has to be compared against all the others to remove duplication and this involves lot of processing. About ten lakh per day are processed and this is the reason it takes time to clear the backlogs, Nilekani said.
The chairman said that at present they are just re-checking everything and are verifying if anything needs to be fine tuned. Nilekanin added that they also have the necessary funds as the Expenditure Finance Committee of the Finance Ministry has approved Rs 8 crores for the process.
