Smartphone manufacturing giant Sony Mobile has announced that it has cancelled the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Xperia Play smartphone. Sony while talking about the reason for the cancellation, cited lack of stable and consistent performance during the testing for the cancellation of the update for the Xperia Play.

The company had earlier announced the Android 4.0 update for the Xperia Branded devices. The first in the line are Xperia NXT devices, Xperia S, Xperia U and Xperia P for the Android 4.0 ICS update.

Roll back of the 4.0 Android update for the Xperia Play has come as a surprise and also a disappointment for the users. The company mentioned on its official blog that they conducted extensive in-house testing with the developers teams and partners, but the Xperia Play could not provide consistent and stable experience, especially with the gaming.

Sony also said that the feedback from the beta ICS ROM testers also played an important role in the decision. The Android 4.0 update has begun for the 2011 Xperia devices, Arc S, Ray and Neo V. Sony Mobile will push the Android 4.0 update for all the 2011 Xperia and Xperia NXT devices by later this year.
