After the win of the Indian Premiere League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the season 5 of the IPL, it was almost like a holiday declared on May 29, 2012 in Kolkata. The government of Mamata Banerjee was seen celebrating the success of the KKR team as thousands of IPL enthusiasts came on the streets.
While most of the people were seen celebrating the win on the streets, the offices reported thin attendance while the business people also reported a loss of production. It was like the whole city came to a stand still as all the office goers took time to celebrate the win or many of them could not get to work even if they wanted.
The roads were flooded with people participating in the victory parade. About 70,000 people gathered at the Eden Gardens while 20,000 to 30,000 people stood outside as the Knights took their victory parade in the stadium.
As Mamata Banerjee celebrated the win of the KKR, a section of the city people including the businessmen calculated the enormous losses. One of the economics professor of Jadavpur University said that it was a colossal waste as many manhours were lost. The professor added that the celebrations could have also held during the weekend.
