In the state of Maharashtra, apart from Mumbai, even the city of Pune is considered as one of the busiest cities in the state. The government of Maharashtra has now approved state’s second Metro rail.
One of the top officials informed after a late night Cabinet meeting on June 6, 2012, “In the first phase, it will connect Ramwadi-Wanaz on an elevated track at a cost of Rs.2,593 crore”. The second phase will be around 44 km long and will cost Rs. 5,391 crore which will be connecting. There are large industrial areas of the city.
The whole project is expected to be completed within five years just for the construction alone. The setting up of Pune Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) has been approved by the state along with a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the mega project.
The Pune project is considered as the biggest single project taken up in the state’s academic and cultural capital which is about 250 kms from Mumbai. The Pune Municipal corporation (PMC) has been appointed as the nodal agency for implementing the BOT (Build-operate-transfer) project till the SPV is set up. The proposal of the Metro rail was submitted by the PMC to the state government last year. The metro rail project is also considered as a political victory of sorts for the National Congress party led by Sharad Pawar.
