Indian resident, Surjeet Singh after spending 30 years in Pakistan Jail has been released and handed over to India. Singh was jailed on charges of spying and told the media outside Karachi Jail that he was very happy with his release.
The ex-prisoner said, “I am waiting to hug my children and go to the Golden Temple”. During these thirty years of imprisonment, one of Surjeet Singh’s son died while other children got married.
Singh was escorted to the Wagah border crossing by the Pakistani policemen and was handed over to the Indian authorities. In a short while Surjeet Singh will be reunited with his family.
The family of Singh on Ferozepur is equally excited to see him after a long time and are in full celebration mode. They are visibly excited at the prospect of seeing him after a long time. Singh’s son Kulwinder said, “I was just three years old when he left.
It’s been so long and we are really awaiting his release”. Surjeet was arrested in the year 1982 and his family said that until 2005, they had no idea if Singh was alive or not. Singh was given death sentence but it was commuted to life imprisonment by the then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
