Indian gold medallist athlete, Pinki Pramanik on July 11, 2012 walked out of jail after 26 days. Pramanik said that she was falsely implicated in rape case. The Asian Games gold medallist was granted on July, 10, 2012 granted bail by a Barasat court.
After her released from the Dum Dum Central Jail, PRamanik while talking to the reporters said she was accused of being a male by her live-in partner. Pinki’s live-in partner is a 30 year old estranged woman who also alleged that she was raped by Pramanik.
When asked if Pinki would file a defamation case, the athlete said that she would consult her lawyer in this matter. Pramanik was received by her father and other family members after her release from jail.
In the year 2006, Pramanik bagged three gold medals in the SAF Games in Colombo when she won the 400m, 800m and 4X400m relay events. On July 6, 2012 a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging inhuman torture on the athlete. The Government of West Bengal has been directed by the court to file an affidavit within two weeks on the progress of investigation. Even the West Bengal Human Rights Commission has stepped in to the matter.
