Indian mobile phone manufacturer, Micromax is known for offering phones with long batter lives. The company has now launched a solar powered mobile phone for the Indian market. The new phone X259 has a solar panel which enables the users to charge the phone using solar energy.

Solar power has not much influenced the mobile phone industry and this might become an interesting feature for those who face electricity problems, which is common in a country like India. The phone can be charged when it is exposed to sunlight.

The X259 is ideal for the people living in rural areas where the power cuts are unpredictable. Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax said, “We have been at the forefront of innovation. We have introduced many categories into this competitive industry, be it long battery life phones or dual SIM phones. With the introduction of this solar phone, our intent is to get rid of the mobile phone charger by including a solar panel on the device itself.”

The features of the solar phone include, 2.4 inch QVGA screen, dual SIM stand by phone with an 1000 mAh battery, VGA rear camera and connectivity options like Bluetooth and GPRS. The X259 has been priced at Rs. 2,499 and will be available at all the leading retail outlets in India.
