About 32 people have died in a train mishap when one of the reserved coaches of the Chennai -bound Tamil Nadu Express caught fire in Nellore. 25 people have been injured in the incident which happened at 4:30 am on July 30, 2012.
The collector of Nellore Sridhar said that the death toll is likely to rise further. Railway Minister Mukul Roy and the chairman of the Railway Board are expected to reach the accident site shortly. The officials said that the Nellore station manager noticed fire in one of the bogies after which the train was immediately brought to a halt.
The fire brigade immediately doused the fire, but by then the fire claimed several lives. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but reports say that there was a short circuit. The passengers inside the S11 coach were trapped as both the doors were jammed.
An ex-gratia relief of Rs. 5 lakh has been announced for the relatives of the dead while Rs, one lakh will be paid for the grievously injured. Rs. 25,000 will be paid to the simple injured people. The railway Minister has ordered a probe in to the incident. Meanwhile rescue operations are on at the site.
