The weather office on August 2, 2012 said that the monsoon rains will not be enough to save the country from its first drought in three years. The officials said that the EI Nino weather pattern should reduce rains again in the second half of the June to September season.
India is known as one of the largest food producers in the world with a population of 1.2 billion. The country suffered a drought condition in the year 2009 which forced to import sugar and pushed the global prices higher. The India Meteorological Department said that the rains over the entire June to September season were expected to be less than 90 percent of the long term averages.
