After being critical for several days, former chief minister of Maharashtra and Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away on August 14, 2012 in a hospital in Chennai. Deshmukh was being treated in Chennai for a serious liver ailment.
The doctors were looking out for a liver donor to carryout a transplant on the minister. Attempts were even made to retrieve a liver from a brain dead man, from a government hospital in Chennai but it proved futile as the man died even before the doctors could operate on him.
The minister was admitted to the Global Hospital on August 6, 2012 and the doctors had planned to retrieve liver from a 31 year old donor at the hospital, but he died after the relatives of the patient gave their consent and the doctors were then forced to look for another donor. The doctors said, “The hospital is looking for a liver donor”.
Deshmukh a few days back showed some signs of improvement and has been on and off the ventilator before he was being prepared for a transplant. Deshmukh was brought from Mumbai to Chennai on an air ambulance while he was in a critical condition. At a point even son Riteish Deshmukh said that he was ready to give his liver to his father.
