The Fire and Disaster Management Agency on August 18, 2012 said that the number of people taken to the hospital to be treated for heatstroke reached an all time high of 21,082 in the month of July 2012. The agency added that the majority of those treated were 65 or older and accounted for 9,531 cases.

The emergency services are appealing the people to stay away from direct sunlight as much as possible and drink plenty of water. The agency has also advised the older people to switch on their air conditioning. It is the highest number recorded as compared to the statistics of the month ofg July in the year 2008.
