Yu Wenxia, Miss China 2012 won the Miss World pageant on August 18, 2012 at an event which was held at Ordos, a city in the Inner Mongolia. The second place in the pageant was won by Sophie Moulds of Wales while Jessica Kahawaty of Australia finished third.
Most of the audience at the final ceremony of the event was Chinese who erupted in joy, when it was announced that the home candidate Wenxia has been awarded the coveted title. The 23 year old who is an aspiring music teacher said, “When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in thefuture I can help more children to feel lucky”.
Yu has become the second Miss World from China and appeared on stage in a dazzling array of ballgowns during the two hour final event. Last year’s winner from Venezuela handed over the crown to Yu who wore a sparkling blue dress at the DongSheng stadium in Ordos.
The final event was watched by a worldwide TV audience of an estimated 1 billion viewers. The event included a performance from the group of musicians playing the erhu, which is a traditional two-stringed instrument. This year a total of 116 contestants took part in the pageant.
