Twitter has acquired Atebits, the company that makes Tweetie – a Twitter client for the iPhone.

Reports say that “Tweetie” is going to be now called “Twitter for iPhone”, and the price will move from $2.99 to $0 (free).

Some say that this move is controversial, since this acquisition, as well as the release of an official Twitter client for BlackBerry, puts micro blogging giant Twitter in direct competition with third-party developers.

Twitter CEO Evan Willians said of the new deal: “People everywhere should be able to access Twitter without friction or confusion. Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes App Store revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience.”
