Plans have been revised by the Tokyo Metropolitan government to revise its emergency guidelines in an attempt to reduce the number of fatalities by at least 60%. In the month of April, it has been asserted by the experts in the government that around 9,600 fatalities could occur in case of an earthquake in Tokyo.

It has also been predicted that up to 30,000 buildings could be completely destroyed by fire or gas explosions and that 8.5 million people would be either stranded or have to be evacuated from their homes. A government task force has been charged with implementing measures aimed at reducing fatalities by 6,000 and razed buildings by 20,000. The city officials at Tokyo also said that they hope to be able to reduce the number of potential deaths by installing fire-fightning and fire- prevention equipment in the areas which are densely packed with wooden buildings.

The government is also aiming to ensure that the medical care is not disrupted by attempting to earthquake proof all medical facilities.
