The state of Uttarakhan was struck by a series of cloud bursts last night which triggered landslides, and flash floods. The incident left 33 people dead and 35 are missing while several have been injured in parts of the hill state.
Piyush Rautela the executive director of Disaster Management and Mitigation and Mitigation Department (DMMD) said, “29 bodies have been recovered so far and 35 persons are still missing”. Rautela also said that the villages like Chunni, Mangoli, Kimana, Sansari, Brahmankholi, Premnagar, Giriya and Juatok inUkhimath were the worst hit.
he authorities had launched rescue and relief operations in the calamity struck region with the help of the army and ITBP personnel. The executive director also said that the intermittent rains hampered the relief and rescue operations.
120 army and ITBP personnel were pressed for the rescue operations. For evacuation a helicopter has been kept on standby. The calamity has disrupted the traffic along several roads including the national highways in the area. The highways of Rishikesh –Badrinath and Rishikesh- Gangotri have been closed due to land slips triggered by rains. Chief minister Vijay Bahuguna, expressing shock over the incident asked the District Magistrate to ensure that the relief and rescue operations are on war footing.
