On September 24, 2012 a Chinese court sentenced Wang Lijun , who is the top police official whose defection to US Consulate has sparked off the biggest political scandal in the country. The 52 year old officer has been sentenced for bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe taking.
The officer has been sentenced for 15 years in prison by the Chengdu City Intermediate People’s Court in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Wang had made headlines in the month of February after sneaking in to the US consulate in Chengdu with the fear of reprisals from Bo, during the investigation of the involvement of his wife Gu Kailai in the murder of a British businessman Neil Heywood.
Gu has been earlier been given a suspended death sentence in the case. Wang in his testimony has implicated Bo alleging that the party leader heading the Chongqing city has rebuked and slapped him over the probe in to Gu’s case.
Wang’s involvement in the US mission and subsequent scandal about the involvement of his wife in the murder case has ruined his chances of contesting for some top posts of the ruling Communist Party, which is due for a leadership change this year after 10 years.
