The Chinese railway system will soon have separate passenger and freight networks. The new networks are expected to be operative by the year 2015, when a high speed passenger transport network is expected.
A five year plan was recently approved by the State Council for the transport system of China. The new plan will create a high speed railway backbone network featuring four East-West lines and four North-South lines by the end of 2015. The Ministry of Railways said that the total mileage of the high speed railway will reach 18,000 kms. The high speed lines of China stood at 6,849 kms in the month of August.
