China has successfully reclaimed its polio-free status in 2012. The news was announced by a commission under the World Health Organization (WHO) in Beijing on November 29, 2012. The country had faced a severe outbreak of Polio in the year 2011.
In the year 2011, China confirmed four cases of a wild polio virus infection in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on August 25, 2011. After this the Chinese government launched an emergency response plan and a massive vaccination campaign. The health ministry of China confirmed that more than 43 million people in Xinjiang had been vaccinated. The last polio case was reported on October 9, 2011 and this took the total count to 21, including two deaths. Now however, the country is said to be free of polio.
