The Indian amateur boxing Federation (IABF), was handed a provisional suspension by the International Amateur Boxing Association on December 6, 2012. This comes shortly after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) handed a shock suspension to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Abhay Singh Chautala formally led the IABF and was later elected as president of the Indian Olympic Association. Currently the president of the Indian Federation is Abhishek Matoria. Chaurasia was nominated as the chairman of the national body, leading to Matoria taking over on September 23, 2012.
The AIBA said in a statement that the provisional suspension was due to the fact that they had learned that there was a possible manipulation of the election of the IABF. There will be an investigation into proceedings, as well as a deeper probe into the fact that the IOA chairman was a former IABF chief and that there was a possibility of foul play in the current IABF elections.
The Sports Ministry of India has started taking steps towards conducting a fair election in the country’s national federation. The IABF has been stripped of its recognition, as the elections that took place on September 23, 2012, were in violation of the procedure mentioned in the Sports Code.
The decision to remove the IABF was taken in Switzerland, at a meeting in Lausanne hosted by the boxing world body.
