One of the accused in the infamous Delhi-rape case named Ram Singh, allegedly hung himself in Tihar Jail in New Delhi on March 11, 2013. Prison officials said that the Singh used his own clothes to hang himself in ward number 5 of jail number 3.
On the other hand, Singh’s family have claimed that there wasn’t any reason for Ram Singh to commit suicide. The family added that the accused was murdered and have demanded a CBI inquiry into his death, which occurred under mysterious circumstances. The death of the accused has come as a huge embarrassment for the authorities of the jail, who were already under pressure due to the sensitivity of the case.
Ram Singh’s defense lawyer said that he had met the accused on March 8, 2013, where he found him to be in a very happy state of mind. Vivek Sharma said, “He looked happy. He had his dinner last night. Why should he commit suicide?” Ram Singh, along with four other accused – Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh and Akshay Thakur were under trial in the fast track court for the Delhi gang rape case. The men had raped a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in Delhi. The girl fought for her life for many days and subsequently succumbed to her injuries.
The five accused are facing 13 charges including murder, gang-rape, kidnapping and destruction of evidence.
