After the case in which two Indian fishermen were killed by Italian marines, Rome refused to return the people to India for trial and will be sending them back to work in Italy. Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has reacted to the refusal and has called it has unacceptable. Chandy added that he would raise the issue with the External Affairs Ministry as well.
In the month of February 2013, the Supreme Court had allowed Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre to return to Italy to vote in the February 24-25 national elections. Earlier, the accused were allowed to go home for Christmas. Chandy said, “I am reaching Delhi (Tuesday) night and I will take this issue up with the external affairs ministry. We are also looking to take up this issue legally”. Italy recently announced that the marines will not be returning to India, citing that the country does not have jurisdiction over the case.
Chandy appreciated the way in which the Supreme Court handled the case and added that in no way this will be acceptable to Kerala. The Supreme Court said that the case need not be tried in Kerala and that a special court must be set up in Delhi to take the matter further.
