Social networking and micro blogging site Twitter has completed seven years on March 21, 2013. The day also marked the event of the company’s co-founder Jack Dorsey sending his first Tweet.
On the occasion, the social network revealed that it has more than 200 million active users, which send more than 400 million tweets in a day. This means that Twitter has added 60 million users since last year.
On this day, the social network also created a video which celebrated some important moments on the site. On March 21, 2006, Jack had tweeted, “Just setting up my Twttr”. A video has also shown the first hashtag and retweet in the year 2007, the first tweet from space, the launch of the first official Twitter Japan service in 2008, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the London Olympics, the Egyptian revolution at Tahrir Square, the US presidential elections, the launch of the Vine app and the Grammys, among others.
The video went on to show how the social network has played an important role in different occasions, including some revolutions, calamities, sporting events and new feats. Moreover, in recent times there has been a debate as to whether the social network has provided a means to the common man to shout out his or her opinion.
