A building which was under construction in Shil Phata area of Thane district has collapsed. The death toll in the area has gone up to 30 and rescuers were recovering more bodies from the site on April 5, 2013.
The Thane Police control room said that 69 people have been injured and the rescuers fear that some victims are still trapped under the heap of concrete. There are 12 men among the dead, most of whom were construction workers, eight women and ten children. The deceased also include a pregnant woman who has been identified as Shakila Imran Siddique. The police said that the rest of the bodies are yet to be identified.
The Thane police control room has also informed the media that a case has been registered against the builders Salil and Khalil Jamadar, under the section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The site will be visited today by Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chauhan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
The building was an illegal construction, which was located in Shil Phata area between Mumbra and Dombivli townships. The construction collapsed at around 6:30 PM on April 4, 2013. The injured were taken to various hospitals, where they continue to receive treatment.
