Veteran actor Pran, who is now 93 years old will recieve the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, which is India’s highest official recognition for the film fraternity. The award has a Swara Kamal medal, a shawl and a cash prize, which honours a prominent film personality every year.
Pran will be receiving the award in a ceremony on May 3, 2013. The day will also mark 100 years of Indian cinema. Sunil Sikand, the son of the veteran actor said, “It is an amazing thing. We are happy and honoured.” When asked about why the award came so late, Sunil added that he does not want to get into that matter and that he is happy that his father is receiving the award.
Pran has worked in some of the biggest blockbuster movies in Bollywood like ‘Zanjeer’ and ‘Don’ and was often paid more than the main lead of the movie. In the past, the actor has played negative roles, as well supporting roles. Pran has co-starred with some of the biggest names in the industry, like Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. In the past few months, Pran has been dealing with health issues and has been in and out of hospitals. The actor retired in the 1990’s and had received the Padma Bhushan award in the year 2001.
