Recent report said that there are eleven mobile towers illegally built on the top of schools and nursing homes under the East Delhi Municipal Corporation. Out of those eleven towers, seven have been built on top of educational institutions, while four have been built atop of nursing homes that are located in Shahdara.
Moreover, these facts were part of the answers which were given to questions raised by Sanjay Kaushik, who is the Deputy Chairman Standing Committee of the Corporation, on May 16, 2013. Civic body officials said that there are 1,470 mobile towers in EDMC, out of which 588 are illegal and have been established without the permission of the corporation.
Before a telecom company builds a tower, it is mandatory to take a Structural Safety No-Objection Certificate from the Municipal Corporation. Moreover, there are many cases where mobile towers have been built on unauthorized buildings.
The civic body also said that it has sealed 27 towers and booked 351. However, the corporation does not have any instruments to measure the side effects of the radiation emissions caused by towers. SDMC said that the authority will have to investigate this issue, which lies with the Department of Telecom.
