The country of China is all set to combat problems related to the illegal activities related to health food. Efforts are being made by the country in order to deal with the severe food scandals, it was reported on May 16, 2013.
The China Food and Drug Administration said that it will run a nationwide campaign starting from May 2013 until September 2013, against illegal production, promotion and sales of health food. This recent move will be the first campaign since the newly-formed administration started working in March 2013.
It also integrated the monitoring functions of many government organs and became a ministerial level-agency that will help to improve food and drug safety. The spokesperson for the administration, Yan Jiangying, said in a press conference that the consumption of health food or dietary supplements has increased rapidly in recent years.
Since the end of 2012, about 2,006 companies were engaged in health and food business, which reported total revenues of 280 billion yuan. Yan also said that illegal activities are common and rampant in the sector, including the use of illegal additives in dieting supplements. This campaign will also be the first in the series of campaigns to be conducted by the CFDA in order to improve food safety.
