Popular Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, known for his work on several noteworthy Bengali movies, passed away at his home in Kolkata on May 30, 2013, at 7:30 am. Ghosh was 49 and the doctors said he died of a cardiac arrest.
Reports say that Ghosh was suffering from a disease of pancreas. The filmmaker passed away in his sleep and members of his family discovered his death at 8 am. Theater actor Kaushik Sen said that his death is so unexpected and that he was supposed to watch the new production of their group. Sen went on to say that a friend of his called him and informed him that Ghosh had fever and would not be able to come.
Ghosh started his career in advertising, back in the 80’s when he joined the Kolkata-based agency Response and wrote a few memorable campaigns. He made his first movie ‘Hirer Angti’ in 1994. After the news about his passing spread, prominent personalities from Bengali film industry reached his house in Kolkata.
Ghosh was considered a master at capturing the sentiments of urban educated middle class on reel. Apart from Bengali film actors, Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff also starred in his movies.
