Home appliance industry in China is facing a major downfall these days. However, the demand for cleaner air has increased recently and air purifiers have become a new growth driver for the Chinese slowed-down economy. In 2012, sales of air purifiers reached 3 million units, which is a year-on-year increase of nearly 50 percent.
In 2011, sales reached the number of 1.94 million units, which is up more than 20 percent year-on-year. Home appliance industry has been suffering from a downfall since 2011, after about a decade of fast growth due to factors like rising costs and oversupply. However, air purifier sales are offering some hope for the future.
Xu Dong Dongsheng, secretary general of the association said, “Since the smog started to hit most parts of the country in late 2011, sales of air purifiers have grown rapidly, both online and offline”.
The sales revenue of air purifiers at Suning.com, website of China’s largest retail chain by revenue, on average reached 30 million yuan every month from January 2013 to April 2013. The retail giant also said that total sales of air purifiers in the first four months of 2013 were up by 170 percent year-on-year.
