The tariff war in the Indian market is becoming a serious one, as telecom giant Idea Cellular has announced a cut in the data charges by 90 percent in eight of its circles. The recent move has been taken after other companies – like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone – also announced a cut by similar margins in some selected circles.
Idea Cellular issued a statement regarding this issue, which read, “Idea Cellular has revised data tariff in eight circles across the country users can now access data for 2 paise/10 KB, which is a 90 percent reduction in the existing tariff of 2 paise/KB”. On June 19, 2013, Bharti Airtel announced a price cut of its data charges by 90% for pre-paid users in the states of Punjab and Haryana.
Bharti Airtel announced the reduction its charges one day after Vodafone reduced its data charges by 80% for pre-paid, as well as post-paid customers. Bharti Airtel reduced the charges to 1 paisa per 10 kb from 10m paisa for per 10 kb, while Vodafone slashed the prices from 10 paisa per 10 kb to 2 paisa per 10 kb.
The new tariff of Idea Cellular is applicable to all 2G data users who use data on pay-as-you-go basis, along with on an average on regular data from July 1, 2013. The offer will be valid for 90 days.
