Indian telecom giant Idea Cellular has announced that it is slashing its 2G tariffs by a whopping 90% across all 22 circles. The company said that the goal of decreasing the tariff is to increase broadband penetration in the country.
However, Idea is not the first company to do so. Earlier in November 2013, Vodafone India – which is the second-biggest telecom operator in India when it comes to subscribers – also reduced mobile intent charges by 80 percent, for both pre-paid and post-paid customers on 2G in the entire country. The offer from Idea will be effective as of November 15, 2013 and will last for six months.
The company also announced that the 3G tariffs will now be equal to 2G tariffs across all Idea 3G circles. A statement from the company said, “Idea has reduced 2G data tariff by up to 90% across all 22 circles, enabling users to avail 2G data at just 2 paise/10 KB”. More than 33 million current customers, as well as new data users will be able to take the advantage of the new move.
The statement added that the company’s subscribers can now use decreased tariffs on their 2G and 3G pre-paid and post-paid handsets and dongles. The company also said that the 3G users will be able to save up to 30% on their monthly data charges.
