Asia Bizz: China’s Supercomputer Tianhe-1A Is Running On NVIDEA Tesla Processors

China’s Supercomputer Tianhe-1A is reported to be running on the NVIDIA Tesla processors, which also shares the credit of making this supercomputer the fastest in the world. Tianhe-1A performs at 2.507 Petaflops, creating a new bench mark in computer performance. This supercomputer has successfully taken away the title crown of the fastest computer from Cray XT5 of USA.

Tianhe-1A uses 7,168 NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 CPUs to acquire this mind blowing performance in computing terminology. It takes almost 4.04 mega watts to run this machine in full swing, which means it consumes a lot of precious energy. Till date there is no computing system in the world that has the capability to match Tianhe-1A, at least for now.

If the Tesla GPU’s were not used in the system, the whole machine could have needed 12 megawatts of energy to run with the same performance, which is equivalent to 5000 homes. This machine has been designed by NUDT (National University of Defense Technology) of China, and the country would be using it perform large scale scientific operations.
