Social networking giant Facebook will be introducing a new feature to the site, which will enable users to be aware of the topics of discussion which are trending among its 1.2 billion users. Facebook users in the US, Canada, UK, India and Australia will be able to see the list of trending topics on the right side of their Facebook pages in the next few weeks.?
The new feature will be gradually rolled out in other countries as well. However, the trending topics feature will not be available on Facebook’s mobile version, but the company explained that it is still testing the feature in its app tablet computers and smartphones. The idea of introducing trending topics was announced by the social networking giant in 2013.
On Thursday, January 16, 2014, Facebook said that trending topics will be tailored according to the interests and location of users. Two Facebook users said on Thursday afternoon that they saw trending topics on their pages, which included the Academy Awards, American Idol and Republican Sen.?David Vitter.
The new section on Facebook will also explain why the topic is trending and will be different from a similar feature on Twitter, where the topics are just listed. The recent move by the company means that the rivalry between the two social networking giants is heating up.
