Mobile text and voice messaging communication service by Chinese Tencent – WeChat – is taking steps in order to make its presence even more prominent in the US market. The company is launching a new promotional campaign through which US users of WeChat who connect their account to their Google accounts will receive a $25 dollar restaurant.com gift card once they invite five of their Google contacts to join the service by January 31, 2014.
WeChat was launched in January 2011 in China and today, the application has more than 300 million registered users in the country and about 100 million users overseas. These figures mean that WeChat is the most popular messaging and social media app in China and the nation is considered to be the biggest smartphone market in the world.
The English branding of the application was created in 2012 and it has already achieved significant success in Southeast Asia and Latin America. The US-based office was opened by WeChat in 2013, however, since then, the company was not active in its promotions. Analysts have predicted that it is not so easy for WeChat to become the number one player in a market such as the United States.
Jiang Min, the assistant professor of communication at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte said that the expansion of WeChat is interesting to watch, as there is enough space for good mobile apps in the market.
