US-based software giant Microsoft has announced on February 4, 2014 that Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella has been chosen as the new chief executive of the company. The latest announcement elevates Nadella – who is an offspring of the Indian system – to one of the highest-profile corporate jobs in the world.
The 46-year-old has become the third CEO of Microsoft, after the founder Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Nadella is succeeding Ballmer as the company’s CEO. The Hyderabad-born Microsoft official has been with the company for 22 years and directors of Microsoft have chosen Nadella both as a a company insider and an engineer.
It has been noted that the US-based software giant has been more successful under the leadership of Gates. Gates was a programmer and the first chief executive, while Ballmer – who had a background in sales – took over from Gates and was not as successful. Nadella is now the head of the company which has been struggling in the market of mobile and Internet search.
The upcoming months will tell whether Nadella’s technical background and Gates’ closer involvement in product decisions will give the company the much-needed edge which lacked during the reign of Ballmer. Microsoft in a statement said that Ballmer will continue working at the company and will support Nadella when it comes to technology and product direction.
