Both American and foreign airlines have been warned by the US government on February 5, 2014 that terrorists might attempt to hide explosives in toothpaste tubes. These warnings have been specifically focused on a number of flights to Russia.
An official from the US government said that they have information that the Russian flights are specifically targeted, as the Winter Olympics 2014 are all set to begin in the city of Sochi on February 7, 2014. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement, which said that – as a precaution – it shares relevant information on a regular basis with partners at home and abroad.
The statement said, “While we are not aware of a specific threat to the homeland at this time, this routine communication is an important part of our commitment to making sure we meet that priority”. It has also been said that, as usual, their security apparatus includes many measures – seen and unseen – and that the DHS will continue to adjust security measures which will fit an increasing threat surrounding.
The National Security Council of Barack Obama said that the disclosure did not have any effect on existing guidelines about travel to Sochi. It has also been said that strict rules about liquids and toothpaste in hand luggage have been standard practice on carriers from the United States.
