The death sentence awarded to the four men convicted in the brutal Delhi gang rape case has been upheld by the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2014. The four convicts raped a 23-year-old woman on December 16, 2013 and the incident led to a number of countrywide protests.
The bench consisted of justices Reva Khetrapal and Pratibha Rani, who confirmed the sentencing of the convicts: the 26-year-old Mukesh Singh, the 28-year-old Akshay Thakur, the 19-year-old Pawan Gupta and the 20-year-old Vinay Sharma. It was argued that the crime fell in the rarest category possible and warrants the death penalty. The bench said, “Death reference is accepted. Death sentence awarded by the trial court is affirmed. The appeals of the convicts are dismissed”.
The parents of the victim were also in the court when the verdict was announced. The mother of the 23-year-old murdered woman said that they have full faith in the judiciary and that they had expected this verdict. She also said outside the court room that the ultimate satisfaction will be when the convicts meet to their ultimate fate.
The trial court gave the verdict on September 13, 2013 to the four men. The court said that they will be hanged till death due to the beastly and hair-raising manner in which the crime was committed against the girl.
