Childhood rival Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray to advance to US Open semi-final.
In a match that lasted 3 and a half grueling hours, Novak Djokovic came out on top after winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-4. The match that was held in the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on September 4, 2014. The win means that now the world number 1 will face the 10th seeded Kei Nishikori in the semi-final that will be held on September 6, 2014.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic took the first set in a tie-breaker, which was followed by another tie-breaker that Britain’s Andy Murray won. From then on, it was only a Djokovic show throughout as he unleashed a deadly range of attacking shots to wrap up the next 2 sets 6-2, 6-4.
After the match, Djokovic said, “We both gave our best. At times, the tennis was not that nice, we made a lot of unforced errors but that’s due to a very physical battle we had in the first two sets. I knew coming into the match that he was going to go for his shots and the one who was the most aggressive would win.”
Djokovic entered the tournament as a favorite and has lived up to the tag till now. He will face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the semi-final, who is the first Japanese to enter a US Open semi-final in 96 years.
Kei Nishikori has earned his place in the semi-final as he beat 3rd seeded Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarters in 5 sets.
